A few facts about depression in Australia
- At any given time One in Six Australian men will suffer depression.
- Australian Women are twice as likely to suffer this illness than their msale counterparts and tends to occur in younger than older women.
- The youth of Today suffer depression at a much earlier age than their grandparents ever did. (Some sources quote down from the age of 30 to 15 yrs old today. )
- Once upon a time it was largely an issue in the mentally disturbed, the aged, the diseased & the incarcerated.
- In youth, Depression & Anxiety are THE MOST common mental illnesses by far (Although some would argue that this 'state-of-mind' is a perpetual state of just being teenager)
- 20% of the young will have a significant mental health event by maturity.
- Around 5% of the young experience depression severe enough to warrant medical intervention.
- Apart from the recognised Social & body-image issues, women tend to be more prone to depression & anxiety due to the hormonal fluctuations Doctors describe as seen in Post Natal depression, Pre-menstrual disorder AND Menopausal issues.
- Australin Males are 4x more likely to take their depression thru to suicide than our Women.
- Risk factors for men above the age of 65 to suicide are Isolation, pain, illness & death of a spouse.
- In the past 3 decades the youth suicide rate for 15-25 yo males has trebled.
